Sven Nykvist
Sven Nykvist, whose celebrated collaborations with director Ingmar Bergman included 1973's Cries and Whispers and 1982's Fanny and Alexander, for which Nykvist scored cinematography Oscars, has died after a long illness. He was 83.

Yes, what a cinematographer he was...
But unfortunately, what I remember most about Nykvist happens in The Making Of Sacrifice. In it, the house is set on fire, and Nykvist, on the tracks, starts the camera, only to find (once the house has caught fire properly) that the camera has jammed.
Afterwards, Nykvist, giant that he is, hangs his head while Tarkovsky--more than a head shorter-- berates him soundly.

I haven't seen The Sacrifice yet. My only Tarkovsky left :(
But I have heard great things about that final scene so I guess it must have worked out well in the end.
From what I have seen I remember Cries and Whispers the most. It was painful and also beautiful, it almost felt like blood oozing out of every frame in the film.
