Volver

Just saw this wonderful new movie from Pedro Almodovar. It is not as good as All About My Mother or Talk to Her but still it is masterly. Almodovar's (tragi-)comic humanism felt a little too generous for me initially but I was soon won over. By the time film ended most of my misanthropy was dissolved away! It is full of surprises and filled to brim with genuine feelings. Don't read the reviews, just go if you get a chance.

Two thoughts. First, I had no idea that La Mancha, where the story is set, really existed in modern Spain, let alone it even had wind-mills! I always thought Cervantes had made up the wind-mills bit.

Second, this film I think would be a sharp turn-around for Penelope Cruz's image. She looks so "maternal" in the whole film that it will be difficult for me to imagine her doing "regular" things after it (let me indulge in some patriarchal mother-whore dichotomy here :)). I don't know how she or Almodovar did it, but the more he shows her cleavage in focus (and he does it a lot throughout the film) the more maternal she becomes...

Two images, one from the movie and the other, the "maternal" actress with the director...

Agree with you entirely on the wonderfulness. Don't understand, though, why everyone is so obsessed with Penelope Cruz. I was most taken with Lola Dueñas as Sole, loved the way she engaged with the absurdity of the happenings onscreen. The Cruz character was too caught up in herself, strangely immune to Almodovar's magic.

yes I agree, I liked her sister too. Even the mother was brilliant. the way she just dissolved all the heaviness of a scene with a comic flicker of her eyebrow was jsut wonderful. I think she was in women on the verge of nervous breakdown too, she looked much older and sadder this time though.

umm...
since I have not been audience to the movie, I am restricting self to commenting on Penelope, the spanish enchantress....she*keeping in mind Vanilla Sky n other movies*, I always found her earthy.though she looks delicate, she exudes a sense of rawness.
now coming to the delectable aspect-cleavage, oh that pretentious snob~~looks like a piece of poetry that wishes to break through beyond the frail clothing...maternal, am not sure.. I feel hint of cleavage lends a casual format to the woman, who is seen in control of her femininity...

hmmm. nice. :)

that maternal thing is a subjective opinion of course, may be i just wasn't in the mood of staring at her cleavage!

umm..a crystal clear case study for

HEDONISTIC VIEW OF BEAUTY vs AN-HEDONISTIC VIEW OF BEAUTY

that anhedonism sounds too close and homespun (smiles)
